Matthew Krishanu

“My subject matter is often autobiographical, drawing on memories and photographs – particularly of my childhood in Bangladesh. Rather than straight autobiography, I prefer to work with imagery that has open narratives.

I am increasingly working in mixed media – beginning a painting with watery acrylics, before building layers in thicker oils. Sometimes parts of the painting are only in acrylics, and other elements are painted in oil. I also tend to use paint in a more translucent manner when painting on gessoed board, as opposed to primed canvas. This is explored in my subject matter – the elements earth, air, water, and the contrast between architecture and nature.”

Matthew is featured in our current exhibition of shortlisted artists for the Griffin Art Prize 2014 UK.
