Dawn Olive, Covered, 2014The Beyond the Board exhibition marked the first time that Dawn combined both her love of surfing and art. Previously she had kept them both as separate endeavours, where surfing was used as an escape from her art, which was always more theoretical and academic.

Dawn, who also co-curated the Beyond the board exhibition, aims to highlight the ideals of the body promoted by the media in the surfing industry. Photographs of her forcing her body into her wetsuit (by Sir Colin Hampton-White) express her feelings of discomfort and of being distinctly unglamorous. This contrasts with many publicity images of women in the sport.

Her work is multidisciplinary, as she creates both photographic work and sculptural installations. Dawn seeks to portray a concept over beauty, so her chosen medium depends on what can best present this idea.
