Alexandra Sinopoulou

sinopoulou,_a,_bring_me_coffee_or_tea“My practice revolves around the concept of history painting- portrayals of historical, mythical, or biblical scenes. The subjects of the paintings are metanarratives, which are the symbolic and they carry impersonal, cultural memory that is buried in the unconsciousness and through my work they function as allegories of today. These paintings are of dual nature: although they mirror apathy, boredom, and irony; at the same time they represent an (perhaps failed) attempt to overcome this state. Seeking freedom from contemporary irony is a political act and the very action of painting as a medium is important in terms of social critique as there are crucial characteristics of painting as a language: time, stillness, human trace.”

Alexandra is featured in our current exhibition of shortlisted artists for the Griffin Art Prize 2014 UK.
